Gujaratis are known for traveling the world. There are many countries in the world where Gujaratis are going for business, profession and now for education. To meet the increasing flow of domestic and international air passengers, a new international airport is now being developed due to the limitation against the expansion of Ahmedabad International Airport. The work of Green Field International Airport at Dholera, 100 km from Ahmedabad, has started in full swing and this airport will be operational in 2024-25. On the other hand, in the month of April itself, the work of expansion of infrastructural facilities including three new aerobridges has also started at Ahmedabad-based Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, operated by Adakki Group, which has handled the highest number of passengers up to one million.
Thousands of passengers travel by air from Gujarat to many countries including America, England, Canada, Gulf for trade and business. Ahmedabad's Sardar Patel International Airport handles up to 80 lakh passengers annually.
It is inevitable. To meet this influx, several new facilities have been added to the domestic and international terminal and airport complex. Due to this, along with the smooth operation of motorcars, the relatives coming to pick up the passengers, now the passengers are getting a lot of ease in the place of waiting lounge, security clearance, customs clearance etc. The airport is located in the center of the city but enough land is available for its expansion.
With the addition of 3 new aerobridges in Ahmedabad, the total number will be 7.
At present, more than twenty airlines are operating at Amghwad International Airport and many of its flights are handling passengers day and night, while four aerobridges are currently operational so that passengers can enter the airport terminal directly from the flight. As part of the multidimensional expansion undertaken at this terminal, the work of constructing three new aerobridges has already started. Due to this, passengers of seven flights can be handled at the same time. As on date, with the addition of infrastructure for 1-1 (domestic), seven e-gates have been installed for domestic departures to provide quick and seamless processing experience to the passengers. Passengers traveling with only handbags can do web check-in, self-check-in machines have also been set up to collect boarding passes. The security check area in the domestic terminal has been increased. Passenger capacity and comfort have been increased with a new container retail area and drop-off lanes outside the domestic terminal. After the implementation of the new summer timetable, Patra Airport connects 39 domestic and 19 international destinations with new domestic and international airlines.
Since this is not possible, the government has started the construction of a new international airport at a cost of Rs.1305 crores between Ahmedabad and Bhavnagar, 108 km away from Ahmedabad to Bhavnagar, at a distance of one kilometer from the runway of Dholera Special Meter and the work is expected to start.
It has happened. The state government has allotted more than 1400 hectares of land for the project. The runway of the second phase will be of 4000 meters and the design is now being prepared for the terminal building connecting the runways of both these phases. This airport will be capable of handling 4E class aircraft. All kinds of facilities are being designed here, according to a senior official associated with this project.
A joint venture between the Government of Gujarat and the National Industrial Corridor Development and Implementation Trust, headed by the Airport Authority of India, has given final approval to this project. The first phase of this airport was called 3200.
