Biggest Corporate Investment In The History Of India

Dholera is a city in the Indian state of Gujarat and it has been identified by the Gujarat government as a Special Investment Area (SIR). The area is being developed into a smart city, with state-of-the-art infrastructure and equipment. One of the key areas where the government is focusing on the development of Dholera is the electronics industry and especially semiconductor chip manufacturing.

The Gujarat government took the initiative to set up a semiconductor chip factory in Dholera to take advantage of this growing demand. The factory is expected to be a major investment in the region, creating job opportunities and attracting other companies to establish in the regionA joint venture between Indian conglomerate Vedanta and electronics manufacturing giant Foxconn has completed the special investment site Dholera near the city of Ahmedabad in Gujarat to establish a semiconductor and display manufacturing plant.

Current Status of India in Semiconductor Chips

India currently imports all chips and the market is expected to grow to $100 billion by 2025 from the current $24 billion. However, for domestic semiconductor chip production, India has recently launched several initiatives. The Union Cabinet has allocated an amount of 76,000 crores to support the development of the 'display and semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem'.

Giant Investors Invested In Semiconductor Plants in Dholera:

  • Vedanta and Foxconn last September signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government of Gujarat to invest Rs 1,54,000 crore to set up a factory in the state. This will be the first semiconductor manufacturing facility in India.
  • Tata Group has committed to invest Rs 4,000 crore to establish a company in the Dholera Special Investment Area (DSIR) in Gujarat. According to a senior state government official, the company purchased a 126-acre site in Dholera. Tata Corporation has announced the establishment of a lithium-ion battery production unit. They have acquired 126 acres of land and in the first phase, the company will invest Rs 1,000 crore.

Advantages of Semiconductors Plants

  • A comparison of semiconductors and vacuum diodes will provide a more vivid picture of the benefits of semiconductors.
  •  Unlike vacuum diodes, semiconductor devices do not have a filament. Accordingly, there is no need to heat the semiconductor to emit electrons.
  •  Semiconductor devices can be used immediately after the circuit device is powered on.
  •  Semiconductors, unlike vacuum diodes, do not hum during operation. Compared with vacuum tubes, solid-state devices always require low operating voltage.
  • Because semiconductors are small, the circuits that use them are also small.
  •  Semiconductors, unlike vacuum tubes, are shock resistant. In addition, they are smaller, take up less space, and consume less energy.
  • Semiconductors are extremely sensitive to temperature and radiation compared to vacuum tubes. Semiconductors are cheaper than vacuum diodes and have a much longer lifespan.
    • Semiconductor devices do not need a vacuum to operate.
